30th April 2011

We left the campsite after breakfast to drive the 260km to the boarder and Greece, after looking at the map we decided to take the coastal route as it seemed more interesting. That’s for sure!! I decided to fill up with diesel as diesel in Greece is 1.50-1.60 Euro a litre and in Albania its 1.30 so it a saving, at the garage I noticed that the filler cap on the aux tank had been knocked out of position. So it’s out with the tools and a repair job as the plastic thread was damaged as well, all good we are off again it was only later when I went up a very pot holed road that I realised the reason for the damage, my new steps were catching in the cap as the cab rolls from side to side so a quick road side repair and the removal of the steps and the problem is solved. Back to the interesting coast we are about 80km from the boarder and we have to climb up a very steep pass the signs are showing 10% incline I am sure it was more as I was down to 4th and using the overdrive the it started to rain and mist it got so bad we were in 3rd and could hardly see 5 meters in front that coupled with full lock switch back both up and down the pass made for an interesting couple of hours driving… At the last town we encountered another pass but no rain which is good as the turns were again full lock up and very low gear. By the time we reach the boarder its 19h30 and we still have 60 km to the town of Ioannina ,by the time the grumpy customs official who has looked in every cupboard in Fritz, is satisfied that we are not smuggling whatever they smuggle here. Its 20h00 and we only find a B&B at 21h30 luckily they are still awake, day done.
